Lesbian and Gay Custody Project Launched

On August 30, The Women's Legal Defense Fund launched a new Project on Lesbian and Gay Custody funded by a grant from the Chicago Resource Center. The Project, headed by Nancy, Polikoff will promote the use of standards that minimize the significance of a parent's homosexuality in custody determinations.

"Judges have enormous discretion in making child cuscustody decisions," Polikoff noted, "and it is difficult to get a judge to focus on parenting ability and the parent-child relationship rather than on the parent's homosexuality itself. Each case can turn on the perceptions and prejudices of the judge."

The Project staff will prepare training materials and offer training sessions for attorneys who represent lesbian and gay parents in D.C, Maryland and Virginia. As a resource for parents themselves, the Project will expand the section of WLDF's

Custody Handbook that is written Specifically for lesbian mothers.

In addition, the Project staff will update WLDF's listing of mental health professionals willing

testify in court on behalf of lesbian and gay parents, and encourage other organizations around the country to develop similar resources. Women's Legal Defense Fund also hopes that existing support groups for lesbian mothers will contact the office so that WLDF staff can refer callers for support. As before, WLDF counselors will be trained to respond to information requests from lesbian and gay parents seeking custody.

to Build Bridges

Fred Small and Betsy Ross will appear in concert Sunday, October 27, at 7:30 pm in the Shire coffeehouse, downstairs in the University Centre, Cleveland State University, East 22nd Street and Euclid Avenue. Sponsored by the CSU Campus Programming Board in association with Cleveland Beacon Education Fund, the concert's theme is building bridges between men and women, gay and straight. Small and Ross are appearing together for the first time.

Combatting discrimination against lesbians has always been a priority of WLDF, a ization of feminist attornon-profit membership organneys dedicated to the elimination of sex discrimination throughout U.S. society. WLDF staff and volunteers work to redress inequality through litigation, legal counseling and information, public education, and moni toring local and national agencies responsible for enforcing laws that prohibit sex discrimination. The Lesbian and Gay Custody Project is one activity of the National Project on Women and Child Custody established by WLDF in 1982: Ms. Polikoff, an attorney with ten years experience in family directs both law, projects.

Advance ticket prices are $3 for CSU students and $6 for the general public. Door prices are $4 and $7, respectively. Tickets may be purchased at the Campus Programming
